How To Tame Your Bearded Dragon Quickly In 3 Steps

How To Tame Your Bearded Dragon In 3 Simple StepsBearded dragons are one of the most popular pet reptiles in the world. Not only because they are cute, easy to take care of and look like a dragon. Nope! They are also very calm and most of them can be petted and handled right from the start, without doing anything. So of course this makes them good, so called “starter reptiles” and further they are awesome reptiles for kids.

However there are some bearded dragons which do not want to be petted, handled or even looked at. Those beardies will bite their owners and get in full dragon mode as soon as a human get close to them. Others are pretty shy and hide whenever somebody gets too near to the terrarium.

So if you visit this article, you most probably want to know how to tame your bearded dragon quickly. Good news! You came to the right website. In this article I will show you that taming a bearded dragon is pretty easy and only requires three simple steps.

Before we get right into things here, I just want to mention one thing. Do not believe anybody who tells you that your bearded dragon can´t be tamed. That´s just not true. Every dragon can be tamed.

So let´s start!

Step 1 – Let that beardie get used to you

The first step does not require real action. No matter if your bearded dragon is totally aggressive or if it is shy as hell, it needs to get used to your presence. Whatever you do, do it near the tank of your bearded dragon.

Don´t get me wrong here, I do not want you to carry your bearded dragon tank with you to the toilet so that you can always be near your dragon. Just do normal things near to the terrarium. If you watch TV, do it next to your bearded dragon tank.
If you call a friend, sit beside the tank, so that your dragon can see you. Spend as much time as possible near your bearded dragon.

There will be a point when the bearded dragon will see you as something normal. In fact this is the technique I use to get my dragons used to everything new and it works perfectly fine. When I bought a leash for my beardies I just placed the leash near the tank for a couple of days to let my dragons get used to the leash. Putting on the leash was sooo easy after that.

Step 2 – Handfeeding, handfeeding, handfeeding

When you feed your dragon, do you just throw the food into the dragons cave and hope that this sacrifice offering will not make it kill you? Yes? ….. Beeeeeep, stop it, now!
Stop just throwing the food into the tank. If you really want to tame your dragon, you need to start handfeeding it.

In the first couple of days, you should just place your hand inside the tank, so the beardie can get used to your hand in its territory. Especially with shy bearded dragons, this works great. Aggressive dragons might start to defend its territory and try to bite your hand. If so, you can skip this step, or put on a thick glove, so your dragon won´t hurt you.

Please note, that you should not overdo it. If your dragon is attacking you all day, it will get exhausted and that might be too much stress for your dragon.

Taming a bearded dragon in 3 simple steps
Tame and happy Castiel - Owner: Stormie Schulte

Getting used to your hand also means that you bearded dragon should learn that your hand means food. So get your tweezers out or if you are very courageous feed your dragon with your bare hands.

At first it might take a long time till your dragon will take the food out of your hand, but believe me, it will take it after a while. If it does not take the food, simply skip feeding and feed it the next day. The more hungry your dragon gets, the more it is willing to do to get the food.

Please note that this will do no harm to your dragon. In the wild they are used to not eat for a couple of days if they can´t find or catch food.
If you own a baby bearded dragon I would not recommend to skip feeding, since your beardie is growing and it is better if they eat every day. It most probably will not be necessary anyway, since they are hungry as hell every day when they are growing.

Do not stop offering water!!

Step 3 – Step on your hand

Now we come to the final step. You should have already handfed your dragon for a couple of days. Your bearded dragons is more used to you now, since you are getting into that handfeeding you should take it to the next step.

If you feed your dragon with your right hand, place your left hand under the food you are offering with tweezers (or your bare hand if you are badass), so that your dragon needs to step on your hand to reach the food.

It most probably will be distracted at first and it will take a long time until it will be brave enough to step on your hand to get the food, but the hunger always wins.
If it does not work, simply do as I have described in Step 2, just skip one feeding and feed it on the next day.

Remember, the more hungry your dragon is, the more it is willing to do to get the food. On the second day without food, it most probably will jump on your hand without hesitating. Offering treats your dragon loves most, will make things easier. For example get some superworms whenever you want to train your dragon to get on your hand.

Again, do not skip feeding if you have a baby bearded dragon or if you have a undernourished dragon. The health of your beardie is always the most important thing, never forget that.

Why taming a bearded dragon is important

Handling a shy bearded dragon means a lot of stress for the animal. However sometimes you need to handle your dragon, for example if you need to go to the vet or if you want to clean the habitat.
For shy bearded dragons even watching them can be too much stress for them and that´s not what you want. Too much stress will cause health problems, so in my opinion it is very important that your dragon stays calm when you are near the tank or if you need to handle it.

Besides that you can do a lot more things with your bearded dragon if it does not freak out if you touch it. Just have a look at this article: 10 Best Bearded Dragon Activities And Toys.
I have listed a lot of great exercises there, which are good for your dragon, since they prevent depression, boredom and sluggishness.

Without taming your dragon, most of those exercises would not be possible.

Further exercise

If your dragon steps on your hand while being fed without hesitating, you should get your dragon out of the habitat and do some additional exercises. Have a look at the video below:

If you do it like this, your bearded dragon will get used to climbing on your body and it will become the calmest dragon you have ever seen. Just be patient, never give up, it will happen.

Did you need to tame your beardie or was it already calm when you got it? Tell me about it in the comment section!
If you need any help, just leave a comment below and I will get back to you as soon as possible. I promise! 🙂

All the best,

The 10 Best Bearded Dragon Toys And Activities

bearded dragon toysHave you ever heard of bearded dragon toys? No? Me neither until last week. A friend of mine, who is also in love with bearded dragons, told me that he bought some toys for his dragon now and that he is doing a little bit of playing and training with his dragon.

Since I´ve never heard of beardies playing with toys, I was very curious what kind of toys bearded dragons actually use. With “use” I mean actually playing, or doing something with it.

Since I am running this website here, I am always up for something new, I am always up for some experiments so I can share my new impressions with you guys, my readers. Besides that I also got two beardies and of course I want to entertain them.

I think that bearded dragons really need something to do. They need a little bit of exercise. Not only for their physical health (most bearded dragons definitely get too fat in a terrarium because of overfeeding) but also for their mental health.

Out in the wild they are doing stuff the whole day, like hunting or keeping other dragons away from their territory. What do they do in a terrarium? Right! Almost nothing.

Here is a list for you of the 10 best toys and activities for bearded dragons. Hope you enjoy!

No. 1 – Get a ball for your bearded dragon

I know it sounds simple and somehow unbelievable. Bearded dragons playing with balls? Well sounds like someone thinks that beardies are dogs, right? Well, maybe they aren´t that different from dogs as we thought, lol.

In fact most bearded dragons really play with a ball. Do they enjoy it? I do not know, I don´t speak dragon language, but the dragon in the video below seems to enjoy showing the ball who´s the boss.

So you see, dragons seem to like playing with balls, which is great. It is not only a great physical exercise for beardies, it also keeps them busy, which prevents them from getting depressed from sitting bored in the tank all day.

No. 2 – Buy or build a swing or a hammock for your bearded dragon

Come on, who does not love swings? All humans on earth love swings and it seems like many animals also do. The bearded dragon is no exception here. They love to climb on it or just lie on it, looking around judging everybody, haha.

This is also a good physical exercise for your bearded dragon. Due to the fact that the swing moves when your dragon climbs on it a lot of different muscles will be activated and trained. It is a better exercise for them then just climbing on a rock.

If you want to buy a swing, you should make sure that it is made of good and save material. Swings of bad quality could hurt your bearded dragon. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of swings you could buy, which are made for bearded dragons. If you do not want to build a swing yourself, you could also do something similar with a hammock for your bearded dragon.

Have a look at the article below where I have reviewed one of the best bearded dragon hammocks and explain what fun stuff you could do for your dragon with a hammock.

Why you must have a bearded dragon hammock!

No. 3 – Get a bearded dragon leash

bearded dragon activitiesI was sceptical when it comes to leashes for bearded dragons. I was always afraid that my dragons might not like the leash and hurt themselfes when I put on the leash.

However there is no need to worry about that. My dragons got used to see the leash a couple of days and then I could put it on without any problems.

Just think about the possibilities here. You can take your bearded dragon for a walk, which is a great physical and mental exercise for your dragon. It prevents depression and the sunlight is sooo good for your bearded dragon.

You can even let your bearded dragon hunt wild insects as long as you visit the vet regularly. Please make sure that the grass where your dragon hunts was not treated with pesticide.

The dragon leash is really one of my favorite bearded dragon toy/ activity. Besides that you can get a leash for your beardie for just a few bucks. Have a look at this article, where I show you one of the best leashes for not even $10! Click here!

No. 4 – Get long tweezers

bearded dragon tweezersYeah I know, most of you guys probably don´t need tweezers or don´t want tweezers, since you enjoy feeding your bearded dragons without that stuff.

However it is not really about the feeding. Tweezers are awesome to play chase with your bearded dragon. Simply grab a cricket or a dubia or something like that and show it to your dragon. Of course, as you already know, your dragon most probably will freak out and try to catch the food.

Let your dragon run, climb and jump and you will have a healthy bearded dragon. This is a great exercise for your bearded dragon, because you simulate nature here. In the wild bearded dragon hunt their food all day.

Further this is not only good for your bearded dragon. I bet you are also going to have a lot of fun playing with your bearded dragon. 🙂

Note: Please make sure that you don´t overdo it here. Play chase for your bearded dragon, but do not do it too long as it could be too much for your dragon at some point.

No. 5 – Food in a package

Have you ever left your bearded dragon together with a transparent box full of crickets on the floor? If not, you should definitely try it out. Your dragon will hunt the box like crazy to get the food inside.

It is the same as letting your dragon hunt food with tweezers, but just for lazy people, haha.

No. 6 – Get a mirror

bearded dragon toySounds weird, but is one of the best and most natural things you can do for your bearded dragon. Place a mirror near the tank of your bearded dragon, so that the dragon can see its own reflection.

Observe your dragon. It will start to bobb its head or it will do the bearded dragon wave. That´s because the beardie thinks that there is an intruder. Bearded dragons are territorial and they want to scare away potential competitors, or they even show submissiveness by waving.

I would not place the mirror near your tank all day. Maybe 15 minutes each day, so your bearded dragon is busy, but does not get stressed out. The rest of the day you can just cover the mirror with something like a towel for example.

This also works with two bearded dragons in two separate tanks. If you place the tanks so that the bearded dragons can see each other, you will see their awesome territorial behavior. Just don´t place them too near to each other.

Need a bearded dragon tank? Get a complete, cheap and ready tank here!

No. 7 – Swimming

You might not believe it, but bearded dragons are great swimmers and they love it! Have a look at this video below of a german guy who lets their dragons swim in his pond.

Awesome, isn´t it?

You can let your dragon swimm in your pool if you just use normal water. You can also fill your bathtub with water and let it swim in there. Or you use a clothes hamper for that, as long as it has no holes it should work. If you have a pond, that probably would be the best! Let it swim in your pond 🙂

Please make sure that you always keep an eye on your beardies while they swim. They are good swimmers and most probably nothing bad will happen, but you never know.

No. 8 – Build caves for your dragon

I have found a great substrate for bearded dragons which is not dangerous and awesome for creating an extremely good looking bearded dragon habitat.

You can find my article on this substrate here.

With this substrate you can form hills and even caves in your bearded dragon tank. This way your bearded dragon can explore its habitat and it can even dig its own caves and tunnels.

The great thing about this substrate is, that it is very cheap, it is very easy to clean and you can remodel it over and over again. So you can create a completely new habitat for your bearded dragon without spending over and over again.

This way your bearded dragon can explore and does not get too bored in its tank. However do not change the habitat too often in a short period of time. That could stress your dragon. You could do it every 3 months for example 🙂

No. 9 – Climbing on your body

Most probably you are doing it already anyway, but it is definitely worth mentioning it in this list. Letting you bearded dragon climb on your body is not only fun for you, it is also a good exercise for your beardie. Just make sure, that you do not overdo it here. I know, I could also do that all day, but we really should give our dragons a rest from time to time, lol.

No. 10 – Get out in the rain

If you live in a warm country you can also get outside with your bearded dragon when it rains and look how it reacts to rain. Have a look at the video below.

The dragon in the video went for the balcony when it started to rain. It was not forced to do that. By the movements it makes you can clearly see, that it trys to swim a little bit. 🙂
It is definitely having a good time and it is not distracted at all.

Always make sure that your bearded dragon likes it. It could also be distracted by the rain and try to get away. Just keep an eye on your beardie and you will be fine.

So that´s it guys, this is my top ten list of the best bearded dragon toys and actvities.

What do you do with your bearded dragon? Do you take it outside or let it climb on your body?

Did you actually try out something after reading this list? 🙂 Let´s talk about it in the comments below! Just leave a comment and I will get back to you!

Have fun with your bearded dragons!

All the best,

Pierre

Bearded Dragon Leash: Make Sure You Get A Good One

bearded dragon leashHave you ever seen a man or a woman walk his dragon in a park on a leash? No? Well, it seems that this is becoming more and more popular and you probably will see it in the near future in your park or on the internet.

Because of that I thought to myself, that I should do a little bit of research and buy such a bearded dragon leash and tell you my opinion on it.

Further I am going to tell you the dos and don´ts when it comes to such leashes.

Here is the leash I bought

I wanted to make sure to get a good leash, because I did not want to hurt my dragons when I test it. So I had a look at the Amazon customer reviews and found a very good one.
Adjustable Reptile LeashTM Harness

I took this leash, because a lot of people tested it before me and wrote a customer review on Amazon for it. Further it had a very high rating of 4.1 stars out of 5 stars.

There were also other leashes, but they did not have very good ratings, even the bestseller in this category had a very low rating, so I did not take it. When it comes to such things, I don´t compromise. I do not want to hurt my dragons or something like that.

Further I think that not even close to $10 bucks is a very good deal here. This is one of the cheapest leashes I have found.

The material

The cord does not catch on my dragons skin. Of course this is the most important aspect here. I was a little bit worried here, but to be honest, I was very surprised. The material is very soft so my beardies didn´t get hurt.

You can buy the leash in two sizes. 3 ft and 6 ft, it depends on what you need. For a garden which is very big, a 6 ft leash would be great. If you want to use it inside your house, I would go with the 3 ft leash. However that´s totally up to you.

Even if it is not that important: You can buy this leash in four different colours – Blue/Black, Orange, Pink, Yellow/Green

It was easy to put on

I have seen that some people had problems with that. Their beardies slipped out. However if you use this leash right and put it on the right way, there is no way your dragon is able to slip out.

I thought it was pretty easy, since you do not have to get your dragons legs through small holes. Took me 30 seconds.

They send you a Digital Step by Step Picture Guide

They have a really great support. On the package of this leash is a support email address. If you have any problems with this leash, simply send them an email and they will send you a step-by-step guide with pictures on how to put the leash on.

Did my dragons like it?

So the product I used was very good in my opinion, the question now is: Did my dragons like it?

My bearded dragons are pretty relaxed, I can do almost everything with them, they would not freak out. However I never used such things on them, so I wanted that they get comfortable with the leash.

I just placed the leash near their terrarium, so they could see it and get used to it for a few days. A lot of you might say that I overdid it… well, you might be right, lol.

My dragons had absolutely no problem with wearing the leash. At first they moved a little bit weird and I really had to laugh. They looked at me like: “Is this a trap, human?”, but after a while they got used to it and moved totally normal.

Who is this leash for?

dragon leashThis leash has some great benefits in my opinion. You can take your bearded dragon out and let it enjoy the real sun. If you have a garden you can let your beardie explore the environment.

This way your bearded dragon can explore and work out a little bit. In my opinion this is great if you do not have an outdoor habitat.

Further you can use this leash inside your house if you have a beardie that wants to escape all the time. You do not have to worry that it might run away and hide anywhere where you can´t reach it. This is good for you and for your bearded dragon.

What you should not do

You should not walk your bearded dragon like a dog. You have to understand that this leash is for the joy of your bearded dragon. Let your bearded dragon explore, let it enjoy its new possibilities.

Never pull on the leash! If you need to get your bearded dragon away from something only pull very gently and slowly. The material won´t hurt your dragon, but the force of your pull could, if you pull to harsh.

Besides that you should not try to make the leash “just a little bit tighter” to make sure that your dragon doesn´t escape.

My verdict

I really like the idea of that leash. It can be great for you and your bearded dragon if you use it right and you do not need to worry about that it could hurt your dragon.

Especially the model I used is very good and I love to use it. So would I recommend to buy this leash? Yeah I would.

If you are interested in this leash you can get it here.

I really hope that my little review and my tips on using a bearded dragon leash are helpful to you.

Have you ever used such a leash? Do your bearded dragons like it? Tell me about it in the comment section below. I will get back to you as soon as I can 🙂

All the best,

Pierre

Why You Must Have A Bearded Dragon Hammock

bearded dragon hammockSo in this article I want to talk about an awesome addition for your bearded dragon habitat: The bearded dragon hammock. Man that thing is absolutely awesome. 🙂

Bearded dragons are one of the most popular reptiles you can have as pets. I mean it is not really a surprise, they look like small dragons, most of them are absolutely calm (some people want to call it “tame”) and they are also great reptiles for beginners.

However buying a bearded dragon isn´t hard, for beginners, buying the right tank can be hard, getting the right lighting can be hard, getting the right substrate can be hard. If you got all that, all you have to do is creating a great habitat for your bearded dragons.

In my opinion, the hammock is a must have for a great habitat.

The reptile hammock I use

I want to show you which hammock I use. I mean I can´t really recommend any other hammock, since I didn´t test the others yet. The only hammock I used so far was the one below.
Zoo Med Mesh Reptile Hammock, 17.5-Inch

Details

It is a soft nylon mesh, my bearded dragons never hurt themselves when they climbed on it, I think that is a very important point.

Further the material is very robust, you won´t see any loose strings which your beardie might eat or get stuck in it or something like that.

What other bearded dragon lovers say

Before I buy a product for my bearded dragons, I make sure I get to know what other bearded dragon owners say. Sometimes I just talk to a friend who also got dragons, sometimes I have a look at forums, sometimes I just look at the Amazon customer reviews.

This product has 335 customer reviews on Amazon so far and it has a high rating of 4.1 stars out of 5 stars. Further it is the Amazon Bestseller in this category.

The suction cups

A lot of people have problems with the suction cups, since they worry that the hammock is not secure for their beardies, because the suction cups get loose easily.

I totally understand that, but to be honest, I never had problems with it. In the first time I placed a soft towel below the hammock, because I was worried too, but the suction cups didn´t fell off so I removed the towel.

You have to make sure that you read the instruction completely. It says that you should soak the suction cups in hot water for 5 minutes before using them. With this method I never really had problems. If yours fell off, just do this.

If you want, you can also remove the suction cups and replace them with small command hooks made of plastic. Should only cost a few cents. However in my opinion there is no need for that.

The lizard ladder isn´t necessary

Well, of course every good product has some additional products the manufacturer wants you to buy too. The ladder isn´t bad or anything, but I just think you do not need it.

If you want to help your bearded dragon to get on the hammock, you can also just place a stone or a big piece of wood near the hammock.

So in my opinion, you do not need it, but if you like it, get it 🙂

Why I like the reptile hammock

I own bearded dragons for a very long time now. At the beginning setting up the right habitat was very hard for me, but I read many books, I talked to a lot of people, made a lot of mistakes and now setting up a cool habitat is pretty easy.

However I like to change things when it comes to my dragon habitat. I like to add new stuff to the habitat to keep my dragons busy. I want to let them explore new things. My dragons are pretty calm and relaxed, so they are absolutely fine with that. Further I can see how attentive they get when I add new things to their cage or change some things.

It can take time until your beardie climbs on the hammock

When I added the hammock to my terrarium, my dragons were very attentive, however they did not get close to the hammock for the first three weeks. I was a little bit disappointed, but I knew that this was a normal behavior.

bearded dragon hammocksAfter three weeks one of my beardies finally climbed on the hammock. At first it looked a little bit unsure, but then it just lied on the hammock with its feed hanging down. Haha I think that looks absolutely cool! 🙂

Now I even got a bigger hammock so that my beardies can lie on it together.

Please note that it can take even longer that your beardies climb on the hammock, some people say their bearded dragon needed 3 months to get used to it. Just place it in your tank and be patient.

It is so great to watch my beardies getting on the hammock

This is another point why I absolutely love the hammock. I have seen a lot of bearded dragons that stand still the whole day, not moving, just looking. Well, my bearded dragons are the opposite here, they are very active.

So the hammock was a great addition to their cage, because after they got used to it, they showed some very interesting moves. It is not only the way how they climb on the hammock. If you hang your hammock a little bit higher in your cage, you will see your bearded dragon jump on it. Yes, you read right, they will jump. (Make sure that it is not too high, you don´t want your beardies to get hurt when they fall.)

I think that might be a big surprise for all the bearded dragon owners who own a little bit more quiet and lazy dragon, haha.

To see this, you only need to make sure that your dragon already explored the hammock and loves it. Further it doesn´t take much space in your tank, since you do not have to place it on the ground. Below the hammock is still space for your beardies to run around.

So in my opinion the hammock is absolutely awesome. Let your beardie work a little bit and hang it higher, but please not so high that your dragon could get hurt when it falls.

Do you already have the hammock? What do you think about it? Do you have problems with it?
Have you ever seen your beardie jump on the hammock? 🙂

Get The Coolest Bearded Dragon Background Ever!

reptile terrarium backgroundSo when I set up my first bearded dragon tank, I had a lot of problems. I needed to fix a lot of things. After I did that, I thought to myself that everything was fine now. However I noticed that my cage looked somehow empty, even with the basking spot, the food bowls and everything.

Yepp, I needed a cool bearded dragon background for my cage. I thought it would be pretty easy to find one, but in fact it was pretty hard.

Most of the really good looking backgrounds were pretty expensive and I couldn´t afford to spend another $70 just on a background. On the other hand I did not want to stick a very cheap looking, one-coloured foil on my new terrarium. So I had to do a little bit research.

Fortunately, you do not have to do the research, since I already did it for you. In this article, I show you what my favourite background for a bearded dragon tank is and I show you what you can do to avoid very high costs if you want to get a good looking background! Hope you enjoy!

Want a good looking background? Do not do this

So what is the first thing you do if you want to buy a background for your terrarium as soon as possible? Right, you run like the devil to the next pet shop and get one.

Well, this is probably the biggest mistake you can make. In our time, we fortunately have the internet which is a big help here. Why do I say that?

In the past I also ran to the pet shop and bought everything the salesperson told me, just because I thought: She/He is a salesperson in a pet shop, she/he must be right. You know what happened? The first time my new good looking background, which was absolutely recommended by the salesperson, dissolved when it got in contact with water.

You know what that cost me? It really cost me around $65! So I lost 65 bucks, just because I was too lazy to do my research and I was not patient enough to order it online and wait for it a few days to arrive. Does that sound familiar to you? Lol, tell me about it in the comment section and let´s have a laugh together :)

So if you want to get a good background, or whatever you want to get, be patient and do your research. Of course there are also very good pet shops, with salesperson who do a great job, unfortunately, however, it is the minority.

Do not use glue without doing your research!

Happened to a lot of people who owned reptiles for the first time. They got a background and used glue to fix it. After a couple of days their reptile was dead, because it inhaled the toxic gas from the glue.

I recommend to use double faced adhesive tape to fix backgrounds. You should make sure that they can´t get wet. Of course this is only for backgrounds which are placed in the cage.

If you just use a normal foil, you should tape it on the outside of your tank. Did I really need to write that sentence? Whatever ….lol

Here are my favourite backgrounds for a bearded dragon terrarium

Universal Rocks Ledge Reptile Rigid Foam Background

Universal rocks Ledge backgroundRating: 4.2 out of 5 Stars
Price: Depends on Size

So the first one is definitely one of the more expensive backgrounds for terrariums. If you can afford it, I highly recommend it. The background looks so real and you can create an awesome and natural looking bearded dragon habitat with it.

Not only that this background looks best in my opinion, my bearded dragons also love to use the protruding “rocks” as a basking spot.

Especially young bearded dragons are very active and love to explore everything. Therefore this background is absolutely great, my babies climbed the rocks up and down. So even if this background is very big and protrudes into the tank a bit, you are giving your beardies more room to move.

The material is not flexible and it is very easy to clean. Just clean it with water and wait for it to dry. It normally dries within a day, but of course you can also put it in your tank when it is still a little bit wet.

If you want to buy this background, make sure to pick up some double sided tape before. The background unfortunately only comes with two small velcro strips and that is not enough to fix it in my opinion.

For whom is this terrarium background?

I recommend this background to every beardie owner who has a big tank and wants to create a very natural looking dragon habitat without cutting or trying to fit it in the terrarium.

Make sure that you get the right size for your tank!

The next background is definitely  cheaper then the first background, but it also looks extremely good in a well designed terrarium as you can see in the picture below.

 Exo Terra Background

exo terra backgroundRating: 3.8 out of 5 Stars
Price: Depends on the size (Around $10 to around $30)

This terrarium is made of non-toxic polysterine of course. I used this background not only for my bearded dragons habitats, I also used it for the terrarium of my chameleon.

In a well designed terrarium, this background looks awesome and besides that, it is definitely more affordable than the first one. You can also cut this background and adjust it to your tank if that is needed.

Other than the Universal Rocks Background, your dragons are not able to climb this background up and down. For bearded dragons this background is ideal, but I would not use it for terrariums of bigger and stronger reptiles.

The background is very foamy and it can be damaged by the claws of strong and big reptiles.

For whom is this reptile terrarium background?

I recommed this background to people who want a good looking background in their tank, but do not want to spent too much money on it.

Of course you can buy this background in many different sizes, so make sure you get the right size for your terrarium.

I used the background below very often and my bearded dragon breeder uses the background below for all of his baby dragon tanks.

Zoo Med Natural Cork Tile Background

bearded dragon backgroundRating: 4.3 out of 5 Stars
Price: Depends on size. (Around $10 to $30)

As I already said, my beardie breeder uses this background for all of his tanks and in my opinion it looks very good. I also used this background before I replaced it with the Universal Rocks Ledge Background.

Some people are concerned that this background could grow mold in the tank. I can only say that I never had this problem in my tanks, the background holds up against moisture. A good friend of mine who owns chinese water dragons also uses this tank and he neither has this problem. So this is more a myth than a fact.

Further this product has a rating of 4.3 Stars out of 5 Stars on Amazon and it definitely would not get such a high rating if it would cause problems.

Please note that sometimes the cork tiles are a little bit smaller than in the description. For this I recommend to purchase it bigger than you actually need it and cut it to make it fit in your tank.

I recommend to use aquatic silicone to paste the tile to the glass. The tile can be bend when you get it and that makes it extremely hard to attach this background with normal double sided tape.

For whom is this background?

You can use this background in every terrarium. No matter what size you dragon tank is, this product will fit perfectly and it does not take much space, since the material is very thin.

Personally I like to use it in my baby tanks, since this background is pretty cheap and doesn´t take much space.

The price is definitely affordable, especially for smaller tanks.
Make sure that you get the right size for your tank.

Bearded Dragon Terrarium Set Up In 5 Simple Steps

wordpress post

If you are new to the bearded dragon world, setting up the terrarium for your new family member can seem like a daunting task. Bearded dragon terrarium set up is not that difficult if you follow a few simple steps.

There are primarily five steps for basic terrarium set up that should be followed. After these are met you can add items to the terrarium to suit your taste and specific needs as you build more experience and confidence caring for your bearded dragon.

Here are five simple steps for basic bearded dragon terrarium set up.

Step 1: Select a Terrarium

The first thing you should provide for your bearded dragon is a home. We commonly call this the terrarium, the enclosure, or the habitat. All of these mean basically the same thing – your bearded dragon’s house.

Bearded dragons are land-based creatures that love to roam from place to place in the wild.

They do not require much vertical space, but do enjoy climbing up onto rocks and other perches to bask.

Knowing this means we need to provide a home that has plenty of area space so the bearded dragon can easily and freely move about.

Adult bearded dragons can reach lengths up to two feet including the tail, so a terrarium that is about three times this length is ideal. Baby and juvenile bearded dragons can comfortably live in an enclosure that is smaller, but you will need to upgrade the enclosure as the bearded dragon ages and grows.

The Zoo Med ReptiHabitat Bearded Dragon Kit is a great starter kit for the beginner parent. It comes with everything you’ll need to get your terrarium from the start.

Step 2: Provide Heating & Lighting Elements

You will need to supply your new bearded dragon with ample heat in order to ensure good health. Bearded dragons are desert-dwelling animals. They come from areas with high temperatures, and these temperatures will need to be replicated in their captive environment.

Bearded dragons love to bask out in the sun in the wild. Reproduce this behavior by supplying a basking perch underneath a basking bulb. There are specialized bulbs made to provide radiant heat for basking reptiles.
